Dr. Hani Sweilam

Dr. Hani Atif Nabhan Sweilam is the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation in Egypt. He was born in Al Sharqia Governorate, Egypt. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, specializing in Water and Environment Engineering, from Zagazig University in 1991. He earned a Master's degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom in 1994. In 2002, he received a Ph.D. in Decision Support Systems for Water Resources with distinction from RWTH Aachen University in Germany.

Dr. Sweilam's professional experience includes serving as a Deputy for the President of RWTH Aachen University in African countries since 2021. He has been a Professor of Water Management and Director of the UNESCO Chair in Water Management and Climate Change as well as the Academic Director of the Water Engineering Department at RWTH Aachen University since 2012.

From 2018 to 2021, he was a member of the Egyptian technical negotiating team for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Since 2012, he has been the Professor of Water Management and founding Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at the American University in Cairo. He has also been a member of the German Council for Science and Humanities and the coordinator of the Water and Energy team since 2017, having been selected by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Foreign Office.

Dr. Sweilam's accomplishments include publishing over 100 scientific research papers and books in the field of sustainable development, particularly in Egypt. In 2019, he won the largest project from the US Agency for International Development to establish the Center of Excellence in Water in Alexandria, after competing with the largest American universities. In 2017, he was selected as a member of the German Council for Science and Humanities and as the coordinator for Water and Energy. He founded the first graduate program in Sustainable Water and Energy Management in Africa and the Middle East in 2012.

Dr. Sweilam has authored 21 international reference books on water resources management, sustainable development, environment, and educational system development. He has also contributed to the writing of scientific books and references in the fields of water resources management and sustainable development. He has published research papers in four scientific conferences and has participated in 10 international committees.
