Ambassador Amr Aljowaily: Egypt’s Influential Voice in International Diplomacy

In a rapidly changing international landscape, Ambassador Amr Aljowaily stands out as one of the leading pillars of contemporary Egyptian diplomacy, blending political acumen, academic insight, and multilateral representation that reflects Egypt’s diplomatic weight on the global stage.
Aljowaily currently holds the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and International Security, a role that requires exceptional ability to navigate complex political files and enhance Egypt’s presence on global security and peace issues. This step is the culmination of a distinguished diplomatic career that has spanned across capitals and international organizations.
From the early stages of his diplomatic career, Aljowaily represented his country at pivotal stations including Washington, Geneva, and New York, where he played strategic roles in the United Nations and World Trade Organization files. He was later appointed Egypt’s Ambassador to Serbia (2018–2022), where he led a new phase of bilateral relations, before being chosen as a Strategic Advisor to the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, where he dedicated his efforts to advancing the continent’s security and development issues.
At the multilateral level, Aljowaily chaired the national task force for Egypt’s membership in the United Nations Security Council in 2016 and led sensitive negotiations within the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, including chairing the United Nations Peacekeeping Committee in 2015 and negotiating the Information Technology Agreement at the WTO in 2007.
His contributions are not limited to politics but extend to academia and media. Aljowaily has served as a part-time lecturer at the American University in Cairo for over a decade, is a member of the editorial board of the Al-Ahram Journal of International Politics, and currently holds the position of Senior Visiting Researcher at the Egyptian Institute for Political and Strategic Studies.
As for his qualifications, Aljowaily holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics, along with a Higher Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy from the University of Malta in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the American University in Cairo and a Law degree from Cairo University, making him one of the few diplomats who combines legal depth with political insight.
Additionally, Aljowaily continues to engage in civil life and public diplomacy, serving as Vice President of the African Ambassadors’ Association, a member of the Executive Committee of the Global South Political Science Network, and a member of both the Egyptian Diplomats Club and the UK Alumni Association in Egypt.
With calmness and confidence, Ambassador Amr Aljowaily continues his mission as an unconventional ambassador for Egypt: a diplomat who thinks strategically and acts as a statesman, believing that his country’s role extends beyond defending its interests to supporting global humanitarian causes and justice.
